DeKalb Police Officer killed in car accident overnight

TUCKER, Ga. --  DeKalb County Police Officer Ivorie Klusmann, 31, was killed early Saturday morning when his patrol car ran off the road and hit a tree.

It happened near the intersection of DeKalb Medical Pkwy and Heritage Park Trail around 2:45 a.m.

Officer Klusmann's car was the only one involved in the accident. Investigators aren't sure what made him veer off the road.

Dekalb police chief Cedric Alexander said Klusmann had just taken a suspect's information during a traffic stop when the person drove off.   Klusmann started a chase, but it was called off per department policy.  When another officer spotted the car, Klusmann started to respond again.  He never made it, his vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

He was killed immediately.

"He was a member of this department and a member of this police family, so it's going to be a difficult time for us," Alexander said.

The chief visited the family to personally deliver the news Saturday morning.

"That was very difficult for the family when they came to the door and they saw me there," Alexander said.  "We all had a very tough time with that."

Officer Klusmann had just joined the DeKalb County Police Department last October. He'd graduated from the academy in April, then started patrols by himself a few weeks ago.

He leaves behind two young children.
