LAA Cine Latinoamericano Film Series to present Sergio
LAA Cine Latinoamericano Film Series to present Sergio

The Latin American Association (LAA) will present the documentary film Sergio Thursday, June 23rd  at 6 p.m. as part of its Cine Latinoamericano Film Series

Sergio is based on Pulitzer Prize winner Samantha Power’s biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello, a charismatic Brazilian U.N. diplomat who ventures into Baghdad in 2003 during the U.S. occupation of Iraq under President Bush’s administration. While there he is captured and held hostage by terrorists and later killed during an attack of the Canal Hotel in Baghdad. Sergio is a fascinating and incredible story of one man’s fight for human rights.

“The goal of Cine Latinoamericano is to share the many diverse cultures of Latin America with the greater Atlanta community,” said Hellen Field, director of language and translation services at the LAA.  “Planning the series is a diverse committee of individuals who are passionate about the mission of the Latin American Association and who want to promote the culture of Latin countries through film.”

“Additionally, the film series supports the LAA’s social service programs,” said Lauren Azoulai chair of the Cine Latinoamericano committee.  “We show an exciting series of films from many different countries, and each film is introduced with a presentation about its context, background and overall theme.”
