DeKalb to host workshop for former offenders

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb Workforce Development has planned a workshop that will give ex-offenders the skills they need to succeed.

The forum, "Bridging the Gap and Breaking Barriers," will be held Wednesday, July 9 from noon to 5 p.m. at DeKalb Workforce Development. It will be hosted in conjunction with the county's Council of Recidivism and Re-entry program.

Attendees will be given access to knowledge and skills that can help them find jobs, return to school and seek out community agencies that can continue to guide them on the path to healthy and productive lives.

DeKalb Fire to participate in World CPR Challenge Day

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Wednesday, May 21 is World CPR Challenge Day, and DeKalb County Fire Rescue is offering residents a chance to learn this lifesaving skill for free.

The department has teamed up with American Medical Response to host CPR clinics at locations across the county. AMR technicians will teach compression-only CPR (set to the beat of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive") from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Race this weekend: Brookhaven Bolt

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- The Brookhaven Bolt, a 5K that is quickly becoming a city tradition, will be held this weekend.

The race will be Saturday, May 17 at 8 a.m. Its course begins at Village Place Brookhaven on Dresden Drive and winds through the Ashford Park neighborhood.

Packet pickup will be held Friday, May 16 from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Big Peach Running Co. in the Town Brookhaven shopping center.

The run will be chip timed, and prizes will be presented to the male and female winners. But all runners will receive T-shirts and the opportunity to compete for great raffle prizes; past awards include iPods, big screen TVs and Braves tickets. There will also be a post-race festival with bouncy castles and games.

All proceeds from the race will go directly to Brookhaven's Ashford Park Elementary School. The race is sponsored by Brookhaven Dental Associates.

Food trucks roll back into Blackburn Park

Food trucks roll back into Blackburn Park

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- Brookhaven's immensely popular Food Truck Roundup is returning to Blackburn Park this year.

More than 12 food trucks will roll into the park on May 14 and will return every Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until the end of October.

In addition to local eats, the Food Truck Roundup will feature live entertainment and family-friendly activities. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs, as space is limited.

An estimated 2,000 people attended each food truck night last fall.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -- The Capital City Club in Brookhaven will host a fun family 5K this weekend.

The Frosty Fun 5K will be Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m.

Registration is $35 and includes a T-shirt. Entire families can also sign up for only $100.

Money raised by the race will benefit Kindred Spirit, a residential home for pregnant teenagers. Anyone who doesn't want to participate but still wants to donate can become a phantom runner for only $25. Phantom runners will also receive T-shirts.
